Back From Assam

I recently got back from India and boy, was it a trip to remember! Master tabla player Kaushik Konwar graciously invited Israeli guitarist Yosi Levy and myself to come to his home state of Assam in the far northeast of the country for a trio concert. Apart from the wonderful performance at the library auditorium in Jorhat featuring the middle-eastern / Indian / jazz fusion music of Yosi Levy, we got to see some of the breathtaking countryside of Assam –  full of rice fields, tea gardens and tropical forests. We held a press conference for local journalists, visited an orphanage- where the kids sang for us and we played for them, as well as ancient Ahom dynasty temples and buzzing street markets. All in all it was an incredibly enriching experience and I can’t wait till next time. Here are some photos from the trip (videos coming soon) -

New Record with Los Hacheros

It felt good to return to The Creamery Studio in Greenpoint, Brooklyn last week to finally record the follow up to the much celebrated PILON (2013). The other Hacheros and I spent much of the winter rehearsing and composing new material and now the new songs are finally immortalized on tape. The studio had undergone serious renovations since we recorded last, so we were recording in style but the tape machine was still the old beloved Tascam 338. The band got an upgrade too, in the form of guest percussionist Roberto Quintero who lent us his hands of steel and incredible energy. You can hear some of the new repertoire at our Sunday night residency at VERLAINE (110 Rivington St, New York, NY) and the new album will be available in LP and digital form this summer. A GOZAAARRRR!!!

Swinging Penguins

The nasty cold wave that has been chilling the denizens of New York City doesn’t seem like it’s letting up any time soon, but that doesn’t seem to deter the music community in the least. In homage to the jazzwomen and jazzmen who keep this town going and the audiences who brave the freeze I’m happy to announce a special show at Bar Next Door this tuesday featuring two of my favorite musicians – drummer Charles Ruggiero and bassist Petros Klampanis. Come check us out, sets at 8:30 &10:30pm. We promise it’s warm inside…
